FAQs

Do you have a nursery we can visit?

1

Our nursery is mainly for mail order and is not open to the public. If local and wanting to see some plants, we occasionally have some in the front of our sister company, Malchow’s Sport Shop, or with an appointment can bring in some plants you had in mind to look at.

Do you have a storefront for retail orders?

2

Our “storefront” is our sister company, Malchow’s Sport Shop, but we do not always have retail plants out for sale so please check before coming if that’s what you’re looking for. Otherwise, you can place retail orders online, as most of our business is done on our website.

Do you ship? How?

3

98% of our wholesale and retail orders are shipped out of warehouse. We ship via UPS and their price points. We mainly use recycled shipping boxes to save on the environment, so if you notice a “random” box, that is why! We hand pack all orders with care and attention to detail.

Can we pick up? What are your pick up hours?

4

You may pick up your wholesale or retail order by appointment only. Our pick up hours to choose from are Tuesday-Thursday from 9:00am to 2:00pm and Friday 9:00am to 1:00pm.

What is your plant policy?

5

Our plant policy is listed in our About section.

What plants work best for wet areas?

6

Species like sedges, rushes, Iris’, milkweeds, and bulrushes are commonly used in wet soils, shorelines, retention ponds, and rain gardens.

Are your native plants locally grown?

7

Yes. Most of our crops are on site at our nursery or within Waushara and surrounding WI counties. We focus on native wetland and upland species suitable for Wisconsin and Midwest growing conditions.

Can native wetland plants help with erosion control?

8

Yes. Deep rooted native plants help stabilize shorelines, slopes, drainage areas, and pond edges while improving water quality. Sedges are most commonly used for erosion control.

What are plugs vs. bare root?

9

Plugs are young plants grown in individual cells that establish quickly and commonly used for large scale native plantings. We sell plugs in 50-cell and 32-cell forms. See our plant list for what plants are available in which size plugs.

Bare root plants are sold without soil around their roots. They’re harvested while dormant, cleaned of excess soil, and shipped with their roots kept moist and protected. This makes them lighter to transport, easier to plant, and often more affordable than potted plants. Bare root plants may take longer to establish, so if they do not grow big and tall the first year, don’t be worried.

How long does it take native plants to establish?

10

Many native plantings take 1-3 years to fully establish and reach mature appearance and performance.

How often should I water new plants?

11

Newly installed plants generally need regular watering during establishment, especially during hot or dry periods.
